What Is a Cryptogram? How to Solve These Word Puzzles
A cryptogram is a short quote or verse encoded with a simple letter-for-letter cipher — and cracking it is one of the most satisfying puzzle "aha" moments there is. If you've never tried one, here's how they work and why large print makes them far more enjoyable.
How a cryptogram works
Every letter in the original text is swapped for a different letter — every A might become a Q, every T a M, and so on, consistently through the whole puzzle. Your job is to spot the patterns (short words, repeated letters, common endings) and work backward to the real message. Once you crack a few letters, the rest tumbles into place.
Beginner tips
- Look for one-letter words — they're almost always "A" or "I".
- Hunt for apostrophes — the letter after one is often T, S, or D.
- Common short words like THE, AND, THAT reveal several letters at once.
- A starter hint (one letter given) makes the first crack much easier.
Why large print helps
Cryptograms involve a lot of cross-checking between the code and your solution. Big, well-spaced type — and a hint on every page — keeps that easy on the eyes and keeps the fun in the puzzle instead of the squinting.
